Facing Spinal Fusion Decision

Why This Exists

In 2003 I came off a motorbike on the Bayswater Road in London. A few days later the pain started. A year later it was still there. So in late 2004 I had a microdiscectomy at L5/S1. The surgeon said it went well. And for a while, it mostly did.

But in 2012 my spine failed completely. What followed was seven years of severe, constant pain — bed-bound for weeks at a time, unable to stand straight, unable to carry shopping or do basic things. I was 42 and it felt like my life was over.

I spent years trying every conceivable therapy, hoping to fix my back. I spent countless hours on patient forums and consulted with surgeons across five countries. It taught me a lot. And in 2019 I elected to have a spinal fusion in London. It worked.

Drawing on my years of experience and thousands of patient testimonies, this guide is what I wish I'd had at the start. It would have saved me many lost years of pain and suffering, and a small fortune in money. I got my life back. But many people do not — simply because the information they need is very hard to find, the decisions are complicated and often made during extreme pain and the tools that will help, when they need them most, are not there.
